About us
Who are we?
GRESS in a nutshell
GRESS is a Cameroonian non-profit organisation dedicated to excellence in research and the promotion of public health. Based in Obala in the Central Region, we bring together researchers, doctors, nurses, midwives and community health workers around a shared vision: to bring about lasting improvements in the health of people in Cameroon and the sub-region, with a particular focus on vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.
Our unique translational approach combines Innovation (the development of new solutions), Validation (rigorous scientific research) and Application (implementation on the ground) to ensure a real and measurable impact on people’s health.

Collaboration and Partnerships
We firmly believe in the power of cross-sector collaboration. We work in close collaboration with public health bodies, administrative and health authorities, universities, international organisations and local communities.
Our History
GRESS in few word
The Health Sciences Research and Study Group (GRESS) was established by five passionate and committed healthcare professionals who recognise the importance of public health research and the need to improve access to quality healthcare for the people of Cameroon, particularly in rural areas.
Faced with persistent health challenges (infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis) and emerging ones (chronic non-communicable diseases, zoonoses and the impacts of environmental change), the founding members decided to establish an organisation dedicated to an innovative approach combining rigorous scientific research with practical action on the ground.

Our three key areas of action
Health Promotion
We organise large-scale awareness campaigns and community screening programmes, and ensure effective patient care in collaboration with public health organisations. We promote primary healthcare by incorporating the ‘One Health’ approach, which recognises the inextricable links between human health, animal health and the environment.
Our activities:
- Routine screening for infectious and chronic diseases
- Development of new medicines to treat priority diseases
- Technical and logistical support for community health services
- Health education in schools and communities
Scientific research
We conduct operational research in public health to generate evidence that informs national health policies. Our rigorous clinical studies assess the effectiveness of interventions, analyse the determinants of health and develop protocols tailored to local circumstances.
Our areas of research:
- Epidemiology and disease surveillance
- Development and validation of new therapeutic approaches
- Study of the human-animal-environment interface (One Health)
- Analysis of the epidemiological transition
- Community-based action research
Training for Healthcare Staff
We build the capacity of healthcare staff through continuing professional development, practical workshops and a mentoring programme. Our training courses cover research methodology, biostatistics, the management of priority diseases and the One Health approach.
Our training provision:
- Workshops to build technical capacity
- Seminars on new therapeutic approaches
- Training in research methodology and data analysis
- Mentoring programme for early-career researchers
Certified training courses with recognised certificates
